Musical Director - Susie Tolley
Everyone is welcome
Music is fun. It’s exhilarating and challenging, not to mention fulfilling
and universal. I have always believed that everyone can enjoy making
music at whatever level they have achieved. A genuine love of music is
the main ingredient for a satisfying experience. If this is combined with
enthusiasm and determination, then we are well on our way to
enjoyment.
As a teenager, growing up in the USA, my schooldays were filled with
music and I knew that I wanted to help anyone and everyone share that
joy. I completed a 4 year course at university learning to play all brass,
string and woodwind instruments, and attained a BA in Music
Education. That was 40 years ago. I have taught music to make music
ever since.
After taking a few years off to raise my two sons, I advertised for
private students. The first nine replies were from people who couldn’t find a band or orchestra which accepted players
of any level, so the Westernairs Concert Wind Band was born. Starting with six musicians about 20 years ago, the band
has gone from strength to strength and can generally boast around 40 members.
We play a wide variety of music; classical, jazz, show, pop and marches, and we do it with enthusiasm, giving all our
proceeds to charity.
